Basic Danish Pastries

Dough:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 1/3 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • Cream the butter and sugar in a blender. Stir in the egg yolk. Add the flour and work the dough with your hands until well blended and smooth.

Or

  • 5 cups sifted flour
  • 4 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 egg yolks

Combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in mixing bowl. Cut in shortening. Place egg yolks in measuring cup. Beat with fork to mix well. Add enough water to measure 1 scant cup. Sprinkle over flour mixture. Toss with fork to make soft dough.

Once the dough is made, put in refrigerator for about 30 minutes until firm. Dough will be a little sticky so that's ok. After 30 minutes, take out the dough and roll it out. Make sure the dough is not too thin. Once the dough is rolled out, cut into square pieces. Make sure the pieces are big enough to add filling.
Once the squares are cut, add a spoonful of Margie’s Guava Fruit Spread*. Once you have added the spread, fold over the square and cinch the side for closure. Then brush a little olive oil or a beaten egg on top for color. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Watch carefully to that the bottom doesn't burn.
